Sorry, but I come from the inside of insurance companies, too, and I disagree vehemently with any characterization of them as unfairly targeted. They all had the choice to come to the table and present their case. They chose not to. You'd think if they really saw health insurance as a loser they'd be the first group to turn it over to the government, let Medicare be open to all. Why aren't they?

Because they make megabucks, and have the entrance to sell other products to employers, who are a far more lucrative market than individuals.

Gimme a break.

While there's certainly a decent number of people who are fooled into
thinking that pills substitute for lifestyle changes, there are many
others who are not. My son's diagnosis this week with diabetes
highlights that. He's underweight, active, eats a fairly decent diet
(all things considered), and before the doctor prescribed insulin this
weekend, had blood glucose levels that could've killed him if he
weren't in decent shape. As we've learned, it's likely that his active
lifestyle prevented us from finding the diagnosis earlier, but now he
will be on some form of medication after his sugar levels stabilize at
reasonable levels. I think indicting the entire pharmaceutical
industry is a little harsh. Like anything else, there's good and bad.
The goal is balance.

I don't know the profit numbers, but I do know that the pharmaceuticals and medical supply companies along with a corruptible, understaffed FDA are jacking up health care costs in an obscene way. Add to t a huge ad budget convincing gullible, lazy Americans that their health problems can be solved by statins or "procedures" so they don't have to bother disciplining themselves with food & exercise.
